Tuna Bardos wins at International Tuna Contest

The Tuna Bardos from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus received first place in the XIII International Tuna Contest Barrio del Carmen 2009 in Murcia, Spain.

The competition celebrated past July 9-11 at Cuartel de Artillería, included participation of 11 tunas from four countries: Spain, Portugal, Puerto Rico and the Netherlands. As part of the event, participants (a total of 400) made musical rounds through the streets of the city, inviting the community to join the activity. During the three nights the public enjoyed free wine tasting at the end of the concerts. Remaining awards at the ceremony included second place to the Law's School Tuna of Santiago de Compostela; best Soloist for the University of Barcelona's Tuna and best tambourine for the Academic Estudiantina of Castelo Branco; Tuna Bardos also receive the Best banner award.

Created on 1994, Tuna Bardos is an organization composed of bachelor, master, and doctorate students from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. This group converge the interest of preserving the highest expressions of art and culture: music; developing, capturing and maintaining a rich and ancient academic tradition like the Tunas. In their presentations, UPR’s Tuna Bardos, offers an assorted repertoire which includes classical and traditional Spanish tuneril music and Puerto Rican folk, as well as compositions from countries like Colombia, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Brazil, France, England, Italy, Africa, and México.
