Hispanics in Research Capability: SoPH & SoM Partnership

The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) awarded the University of Puerto Rico's School of Health Professions (SoHP) and School of Medicine (SoM) from the Medical Sciences Campus a $15 million grant to develop the NCMHD Endowment Program "Hispanics in Research Capability: SoHP and SoM Partnership" (HIREC).

Researchers in charge of this project: Dr. José R. Carlo, Dr. Estela Estapé & Dr. Walter Frontera

This initiative will expand and sustain the school's strategies for building capacity and research infrastructure that will facilitate minority health and health disparities research. A foreseen goal from this partnership includes an increase in the number of outstanding Hispanic clinical and translational researchers by establishing a secure and sustainable funding source with a balance investment policy. It will also expand and strengthen the research capacity and the creation of a Visiting Scientist Professorship Program.

Investigators in charge of this project include Dr. José R. Carlo, Chancellor of the UPR- Medical Sciences Campus; Dr. Estela Estapé, Dean of the School of Health Professions; and Dr. Walter Frontera, Dean of the School of Medicine. Immediate contributors in this assignment include doctors: Lourdes Soto de Laurido and Nicolás Linares, Associate Dean and Auxiliary Dean for Research at the SoHP, respectively; Clemente Díaz, Associate Director of the Master of Science in Clinical Research Program and School of Medicine's Chief of the Pediatrics Department.
