UPR's School of Dental Medicine Receives 2009 Gies Awards

The School of Dental Medicine from the University of Puerto Rico's Medical Sciences Campus (UPRSDM) was recognized with the 2009 William J. Gies Award for Outstanding Achievement. The award was presented at the Gies Awards celebration hold on March 14, 2009, during the 86th American Dental Education Association Annual Session, at the Sheraton Downtown Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Gies Awards, named after dental education pioneer William J. Gies, Ph. D., honor individuals and organizations that exemplify dedication to the highest standards of vision, innovation and achievement in global oral health and dental education, research, and leadership. This prestigious recognition is the result of the UPRSDM commitment to promote global oral health and support dental education since its foundation in 1957.

The UPRSDM is the only institution in the island providing training in oral health to the Puerto Rican population and the only one in the United States with education conducted in Spanish, the native language of most latinos in the mainland. Because of its language, culture, and geographic location, it has built a tradition of training nationals from Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Spain, serving as a bridge between these countries and their eventual destination to their places of origin and the United States.
