For the establishment of the Institute, UPR has already provided a two-story building of approximately 4,685 square-feet located in Rio Piedras. The facility will have three classrooms, an office area for researchers, a library, a meeting room, a multipurpose room, a shop, a reception area and staff offices.

The Confucius Institute is a non-profit public institute which aims at promoting Chinese language and culture and supporting local Chinese teaching internationally through affiliated Confucius Institutes. Its headquarters are in Beijing and is under the administration of the Office of Chinese Language Council International.

More than the start of a relationship between the UPR and China, the Confucius Institute will support, strength and integrate a number of programs that have been around for a longer period of time, including "Chinese Initiative" a special project implemented in the past year at the UPR-Río Piedras, designed to offer Chinese students a first class education at an affordable cost. Students admitted to this program will have the opportunity to study in their area of interest while refining their English language skills, learning the Spanish language and immersing themselves in the language, culture and history of Puerto Rico.
