"Pablo Casals y el exilio (1876-1973)"

The University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus will open the exhibition "Pablo Casals y el exilio (1876-1973)" on June 8 through September 30, 2009, in the showroom A from the Campus' General Library.

The exhibit summarizes the Casals' agenda in favor of music, justice and human rights throughout his exile, which began in 1939 during the Spanish Civil War and brought him to Puerto Rico, homeland of his mother, in which he settled in 1956.

The display highlights its aid to Catalans refugees, his commitment to democracy and the love for his country. Moreover, it emphasizes his struggle for peace, including visits to the United Nations, and the period in Puerto Rico, which led to the creation of the Casals Festival, the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra and the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico.

The exhibition includes photographs, letters and articles that offer a perspective from the Catalan cellist ideal. The event is possible, thanks to the collaboration of Fundación Pau Casals, Pablo Casals Museum and the School of Plastic Arts of Puerto Rico.
